Tips for getting good results

  • Be specific: Instead of “tell me about genes”, try “what phenotypes are associated with Bmp4?”
  • Use gene symbols: Use standard gene symbols (e.g., Bmp4, BRCA1) for the most accurate results.
  • Specify the species: If searching for orthologs, clarify whether you are starting with a mouse gene or a human gene.
  • Ask follow-up questions: You can refine results by asking follow-ups, e.g. “now show me only the significant phenotypes with p-value below 0.0001”.
  • Combine servers: You can ask questions that span multiple servers. For example: “What is the human ortholog of Lepr, and what phenotypes are associated with it?”
  • Use identifiers when you have them: MGI IDs (e.g., MGI:104874) and HGNC IDs are more precise than gene symbols.
